Mitigation Strategy: Reduced State of Charge
Reducing the state-of-charge of lithium-ion cells and/or batteries has been shown to be an effective method of increasing shipment safety.
At states-of-charge below approximately 30%, lithium-ion cells and batteries produce less heat and less flammable gas during thermal runaway and have a significantly lower chance of propagation. Some testing results are given in these reports: Passive Protection of Lithium Battery Shipments and Lithium Battery Thermal Runaway Vent Gas Analysis
