Mitigation Strategy: ULD Suppression
Airplanes can employ an alternate method of fire protection in cargo containers in class-E cargo compartments. The use of a smoke detection system and a fire suppression agent to contain and suppress a fire in a Unit Load Device (ULD) can be attained with different approaches.
An airplane level system that would detect the fire activate an agent to suppress the fire within the affected container. One such system has been designed and used on a specific fleet of FedEx cargo airplanes. The presentation here elaborates on the system designed at the airplane level.
A container based system would employ similar fire detection and suppression techniques. The difference being each container would be fitted with its individual smoked detection and fire suppression system. A container based system has been designed by UPS and is in the certification process to be used on an aircraft. The presentation here elaborates on the container based system.
